 Instrumentals with vocals?
« Thread Started on Nov 5, 2009, 3:11am »

I presume that using a choir patch (sound) in an instrumental submission is fine, but what about the following vocal additions (with no lyrics):

1. A scat along (in unison) with the lead instrument? Like a George Benson kind of thing.

2. A scat as the lead instrument? Like in Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in the Sky."

3. A (real) choir doing a "nah, nah" type of vocal hook as a chorus? Like at the end of T. Rex's "Hot Love".

Other - more knowledgable types may chime in - but I would have thought that as long as there are no actual 'words' then you're good to go...? I is just an (semi) educated guess though.

p.s. - What part of Melbourne do you hail from - looks like another 'Road Rally Downunder' signature on the way...?

As far as I understand, if there are no words, it is considered an instrumental. For example, this song of mine is considered an instrumental, even though it is all made up on vocal scatting:

Hi Scott,

I live East of Melbourne in the beautiful Yarra Valley. Do you mean that there actually is a partition by Australians to have our own 'Road Rally Downunder'?

What Suz said is my understanding of what an instrumental is too, but I'll add that a lot of times with Hip Hop instrumentals you can get away with having vocal stabs that are actual words like "Yeah," "What," and even "C'mon." As long as they are used properly short words like that are usually OK for Hip Hop instrumentals in music libraries.

To be on the safe side, I would always check with the publisher/library owner that you are working with or in the case of a TAXI listing, call TAXI.

Nice part of the world that - we get out there as often as possible - some nice wineries etc. How'd you fair with last summers fires?

I'm outer eastern Melb - we lived in a haze here for months.

I think it could be hit or miss depending on many factors including genre and the screener. I had an electronic-ish song submitted that was for an instrumental listing and there was
a female voice "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" in it.
and the screener rejected it by simply writing
"NO VOCALS"
